Whitening lightens the natural tooth substance. It does not change the colour of crowns, veneers, fillings or composite bonding, which is why existing restorations may need replacing afterwards if you want a matched shade. It also does not correct the shape or position of teeth.

Current shade is recorded and the teeth are checked for decay or cracks before whitening.
Surface deposits are removed so the gel reaches the enamel evenly.
Gel is applied in cycles under a cold-light lamp; gums are protected throughout.
The result is compared with the starting shade and aftercare advice is given.
Short-lived sensitivity to cold is the most commonly reported effect and usually settles within a few days. Results are not permanent: coffee, tea, red wine and smoking will darken teeth again, and a top-up is typically needed after a period of months to a couple of years. No responsible clinic will promise a specific number of shades.
