Braces and Clear Aligners in China

Clear aligners and fixed braces, what each involves, current list prices, and how review visits work when you do not live in the country.

Orthodontic consultation with a dental patient

Two routes to straighter teeth

Orthodontics moves teeth gradually by applying controlled force. There are two mainstream routes: fixed braces, where brackets and a wire are bonded to the teeth, and removable clear aligners, which are worn for around 22 hours a day and changed on a schedule.

The practical problem: review visits

Orthodontics is not a single appointment; it is a series of reviews over 12 to 24 months. Aligners reduce this because several sets can be issued at once, with remote progress checks. Fixed braces need physical adjustments, so patients who cannot travel repeatedly usually arrange part of the treatment with a dentist at home.

This is the single most important thing to clarify before starting abroad, and it is worth putting in writing.

How treatment runs

1

Records

Photographs, X-rays and a digital scan of both arches.

2

Plan

The hospital sets the target position, the number of stages and the estimated duration.

3

Start

Aligners or brackets are fitted; aligner patients leave with several sets.

4

Review

Scheduled checks, in person or by shared photographs, until the planned position is reached.

What orthodontics cannot do

Orthodontics moves teeth; it does not change jaw size, and it is not a substitute for orthognathic surgery in skeletal cases. It also requires healthy gums and good hygiene throughout, because moving teeth in inflamed gums causes harm. Retainers after treatment are not optional if you want the result to hold.

Common questions

How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Typically 12 to 24 months for adults, depending on how far the teeth need to move. Minor alignment cases can be shorter.
Are clear aligners as effective as braces?
For many cases yes, for complex movements no. The decision belongs to the clinician after reviewing the scan, not to a price list.
Can I start in China and continue at home?
Often this can be arranged, particularly with aligners where sets are issued in advance. It has to be agreed with both clinicians, and the records need to be shared.
Does it hurt?
Expect pressure and tenderness for a few days after each adjustment or new aligner. This is normal and settles.
