Veneers are thin ceramic shells bonded to the front of teeth. They are used to change colour, close small gaps, repair chipped edges and even out the appearance of slightly rotated front teeth. They are a cosmetic treatment, not a way of fixing decay or gum disease, and they are not reversible in the sense that enamel removed does not grow back.
| Material | Character | Indication | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| American material | High translucency, layered ceramics | Front teeth where appearance is critical | Quote after assessment |
| Swiss material | Balanced strength and aesthetics | General anterior cases | Quote after assessment |
| German material | Durable, slightly more opaque | Cases needing more coverage | Quote after assessment |
Veneers are quoted per unit after a clinical assessment, because the number of teeth involved and the amount of preparation differ from case to case.
Photographs, shade record and a discussion of what can realistically be achieved.
Usually 0.3 to 0.7 mm of surface enamel is removed; a mock-up may be used first to check the shape.
Records go to the laboratory and temporary veneers are fitted.
The finished veneers are tried, adjusted and bonded, with the bite checked.
Veneers are irreversible in the sense described above. If the main complaint is colour alone, whitening is less invasive and should be considered first. If the teeth are badly rotated or crowded, orthodontics may be the better route. A clinician who proposes veneers for every aesthetic complaint without discussing those alternatives is not giving you a plan, they are giving you a price.
