A filling replaces lost tooth structure inside the crown of the tooth. A crown covers the whole visible tooth. The choice depends on how much sound tooth remains: once the walls of a tooth are weakened, a filling tends to fail repeatedly and a crown protects what is left.

All-ceramic crowns have no metal core and are used where appearance matters. Metal crowns are stronger in thin sections and are common on back teeth. Both are routine; the honest answer is that the material matters less than the fit, the margin and the underlying tooth condition.
